St. Andrew’s Day is on Tuesday. There are churches dedicated to St. Andrew all over Scotland including North Berwick.
Built in the 12th century, so that pilgrims could pray for a safe journey across the Firth of Forth, St. Andrew’s Kirk stands on Auld Kirk Green. When the ground adjacent to the church was being excavated to build the Scottish Seabird Centre, archaeologists found Roman coins, Viking artefacts and metal pilgrims badges featuring St. Andrew.
Human bones, including those of children and people who died a violent death have also been dug up. The church was restored in 2005 after receiving a £50,000 grant from the National Lottery Fund.
The Mad Hatter will be taking part in Tuesday’s celebrations. www.edinburghschristmas.com.
