Hansel Monday

Hansel Monday, the first Monday in the New Year was the town's  main festival when the people of North Berwick turned out to compete in games on the West Links.

In addition to taking part in sports and games, the residents of North Berwick who could afford it, could also bet on the main event.

The town's annual horse race which was held on the first Monday of the New Year. On Hansel Monday 1862, Peter Brodie’s horse the ‘Great Unknown’ was first to gallop past the winning post.

After taking part in the games, the towns people went back to the Burgh School room to complete their day's enjoyment by dancing the night away.

I'd like to thank Maria Furbelli for sending in this week's photie. She's suffering from the flu just now so I hope she soon gets better.
