It's Halloween this Sunday

It’s Halloween this Sunday so keep your eyes open for witches and warlocks.

In North Berwick where I live, the witches held their covens on the Auld Kirk Green. They were tried in St. Andrew’s Kirk, near the harbour. This led to over 300 witches being burned at the stake on Castlehill.

A cast iron well on the wall of Edinburgh Castle Esplanade marks the spot. Women accused of witchcraft were also flung in the Nor’ Loch at the foot of the Castle rock.

If they sank they were innocent. If they floated to the surface they were guilty. Not only women were accused of witchcraft. Dogs were also accused of being connected with witchcraft as the Devil was supposed to appear in the shape of one.

Tommy Robertson of Backtracks, Tollcross sent me the photo of his mate the Mad Hatter to remind you to put your clocks back on Sunday.

Have a happy Halloween.
