I'm back from my holidays. I enjoyed myself up north.
If you’re coming to North Berwick for a visit this summer you’ll be a able to enjoy a lobster as businessman Stirling Stewart plans to open Lobstershack in Quality Street.
North Berwick was famous for it’s lobsters, especially during 1840s. Each boat carrying up to twenty four nets was manned by two men. Setting out about five o’clock in the evening the fishermen worked till sunrise.
A small conical net, baited with either cod, skate or flounder was suspended from a nine-fathom buoy rope. If they were lucky they could catch six or seven dozen lobsters in one night. The lobsters were placed in large bags which were left under water until collected once a week by a fish merchant who paid out three-and-a-half pence for each lobster.
The Mad Hatter loves seafood, especially shark's fin soup. This week’s photie was taken by Tommy Robertson of Backtracks.
